Dress Code
In general, we do not want to get into petty disputes over the clothing that participants wear. We know that such disputes can be unhealthy for both the participants and for the reputation of Chrysalis. However, for the safety and well-being of our participants, we do have to hold participants to certain standards.
Students who do not adhere to these policies may be asked to change if possible. If changing to something else is not possible, they may have to sit out of the activity. We do not wish to humiliate anyone, and we will do everything we can think of to come up with a creative solution to get through any such incidents without embarrassing anyone. However, these standards are designed for the safety and well-being of all of our participants, and one way or another they must be adhered to.
Please remember that these policies have been designed for the safety and well-being of our participants. We want all of our participants to be able to participate freely and comfortably, and that starts with the clothing choices they make.

GENERAL CLOTHING POLICIES
We ask that all participants come dressed in clothing that allows them to participate freely, without restriction of movement, risk of exposure, or potentially causing division with polarizing messages.
Chrysalis activities may involve sitting, standing, squatting, walking, running, jumping, lying down, spinning, and various other forms of movement that may make clothing made for exercise the most comfortable option.

- We require participants to wear clothing that covers everything from their mid-thighs to above their bust, without holes, rips, or see-through parts.
- Due to the active nature of our activities, we generally discourage skirts or dresses for students and adult performers and anyone engaged in physical activities, but we do allow them in some circumstances (i.e. performances) so long as the participant wears active-wear undershorts, tights, or leggings underneath, and so long as people will not be put in danger by that clothing choice (i.e. the risk of tripping on a long skirt).
- Due to the active nature of our activities, we do not allow strapless tops.
- We do not allow clothing with inappropriate messages (including profanity, sexual content, violence, racism and other denigrating messages, hate symbols, gang signs, signs associated with terrorist groups, etc).
- We ask that participants do not wear clothing with socio-political messages on them. This is a general policy to applies to ALL socio-political messages. We cannot fairly pick and choose which messages to allow on a case-by-case basis.
- When using dance floors, we do not allow street shoes (unless they are clean and reserved strictly for dance), or any shoes with marking soles.
- Dance classes for specific styles of dance may have specific clothing requirements. Parents should check the listing for each class to see if there are specific requirements for that class.
- Activities held in areas of gang activity, or for incarcerated youth, or in other parts of the country/world, may include specific policies relevant to those places.
UNDERCLOTHING FOR COSTUMED ACTIVITIES
Students are required to follow certain guidelines for undergarments during costume fittings, technical rehearsals, and performances, in order to ensure that no student is exposed at any time, including when changing costumes or in the event of a costume malfunction. Our specific guidelines include the following:
Students are required to follow certain guidelines for undergarments during costume fittings, technical rehearsals, and performances, in order to ensure that no student is exposed at any time, including when changing costumes or in the event of a costume malfunction. Our specific guidelines include the following:
- Every student must wear close-fitting active-wear shorts (I.E. spandex shorts). Exceptions made on a case-by-case basis.
- Every student must wear an undershirt, tank top, leotard, or similar close-fitting under-clothing item that covers everything from the top of the bust to the waist line. The fabric should not be see-through or have significant rips/tears/holes.
- Any other underwear must be covered by the participant's undershorts/undershirt.
- In cases where participants must wear underclothing with less coverage, we require those participants to change into and out of their costume in a private area (i.e. a closed dressing room or bathroom), and to wear regular clothes or a robe any time they are not in costume.
TATTOOS, PIERCINGS, AND JEWELRY
- Due to the active nature of our activities, we ask that participants do not wear exposed or tight-fitting necklaces, loose-fitting bracelets, any sharp jewelry, or dangling earrings.
- Any tattoos containing profanity, sexual themes, violent images/messages, or potentially divisive socio-political messages, must be covered during all Chrysalis activities.
