Shaping Stories Through
Youth Theatre!

Chrysalis Youth Theatre

Chrysalis Youth Theatre taught its first class in 2012. From the very beginning, it has offered unique interactive learning opportunities that help students to naturally develop personally and artistically through acts of play. Chrysalis makes learning fun and engaging, challenging students in unique ways that help them learn organically through carefully crafted games and activities.

A few of the many wonderful things our students learn:

  • Self-confidence, an engaged mind, and freedom to learn and express (not held back by self-consciousness or any other personal shackle)

  • Healthy connection and use of the body (breathing, relaxation, use of posture, physical interpretation of characters, telling stories through physical acting, learning isolated movements, engaging muscles deliberately in a healthy manner, and various elements of ballet and yoga that promote balance, grace, flexibility, coordination, and functional strength and movement)

  • Awareness and use of senses (touch, smell, hearing, sight, spacial awareness)

  • The importance and interpretation of environment and background in acting (Is it snowing/rainy/sunny in this scene? How does that effect your character's posture/movement/speech/etc? Is your character rich or poor? How does that effect the way your character would walk, talk, interact with others, etc?)

  • Use of the voice (vocal technique for singing and speech, voice acting, dynamics of the spoken word)

  • Breaking down, analyzing, and delivering dialogue and music

  • Building a character

  • Setting goals

  • Using tactics and teamwork to overcome obstacles

  • Solo and group performance

  • Thinking on your feet (improv)

  • Overall control and dynamics to deliver powerfully nuanced performances, in much the same way as punctuation and use of sentences and paragraphs and whatnot serves to take a wall of text and turn it into something that people can connect with (intentional use of levels of volume, energy, and physicality, intentional use of movement and lack of movement, use of physical/vocal pauses, punctuation, and inflections, use of facial expressions, control of tension and overall energy of your performance)

  • Engaging, connecting with, and captivating an audience

  • Learning to work as a family, where people of all ages and beliefs and backgrounds work together on an equal level, built on a foundation of support, respect, empathy, kindness, and joy. We believe and practice in the motto "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." That means helping and encouraging others, respecting others, and interacting with them on an equal level (not condescending). We build people up, and create communities where other people do too. We treat people in a way that is affirming, keeping their self-worth intact. We believe in them, encourage them, challenge them, and help them to achieve more than they ever thought possible.

Chrysalis Youth Theatre will continue in 2018. As we move forward, we plan to more directly incorporate our new personal and artistic standards, which have been specifically designed to bring out the best in every student and teach them skills that will help them to grow and find success personally, artistically, academically, and professionally.

The next Chrysalis Youth Theatre experience is tentatively scheduled to take place from January to early March in 2018.

Chrysalis Can Also Help People Come Alive Through Education...

In 2015, God gave us a vision for a full-time school, Chrysalis Academy Of The Arts. We are now seeking to help this vision become a reality within the next five years. This idea will be explored and carefully built up over a period of time. It may well start as a summer camp program as we shape it and grow it, until it eventually blossoms into a fully-accredited private school. The summer camp version could start as soon as 2018. We just need the right partnership(s), the right church that shares this vision and feels led to partner with us to make this a reality.

...And Bring Light Into Darkness...

Another program we are looking to build is Chrysalis Arts Adventures, an outreach ministry designed to bring Chrysalis experiences to communities in need all over the world. This started with Chrysalis Youth Theatre performing at local retirement homes. We would love to bring our performances and our unique interactive learning opportunities to people old and young, all over, at retirement homes, refugee camps, juvenile detention centers, orphanages, and other communities in need.

...And We Can Spread That Light All Over The World!

Our online learning center, Chrysalis Online, has the potential to expand and connect people all over the world with incredible opportunities to shape and share their stories. That could include our current offerings of knowledge, and also other offerings like interactive learning games and activities, perhaps even live online classes where students can interact with and learn from Broadway performers and other master artists. Technology with websites and mobile apps offers a world of possibilities that we have only just started to scratch the surface of.

Our "Audition Songs" page on the Chrysalis Youth Theatre website has, for the last several years, been one of the most popular pages of its kind on the internet, receiving thousands of visits every month from people all over the world. It routinely shows up in the top five search results on Google for audition songs. This world-wide desire for knowledge is huge, and the demand is still largely unmet, as the majority of theatre programs and teachers focus on in-person opportunities rather than digital offerings. Chrysalis has the opportunity to be a leading voice on the very forefront of digital arts education. There are millions of people all over the world who don't have access to arts education. As more and more parts of the world get connected to the internet for the first time, we have the opportunity to reach people in parts of the world that have never had the chance to learn about the arts. People in rural third-world countries could have the opportunity to receive training from the brightest creative minds in the world, via our website or mobile app. The possibilities for this program are incredible.

Chrysalis Has Such Breathtaking Potential!

All of these programs are subject to the leading of the Lord Jesus Christ. God willing, each of them will find the right leaders, the right support, and they will start to blossom over the next five years. Beyond that, the potential is endless. Maybe ten years from now we’ll have a feature film studio where students can learn movie-making skills and tell the kind of stories that will help people just as Chrysalis was meant to. Maybe we’ll produce music albums, allowing young musicians and singers to create and publish their own work without the soul-crushing pressure of a typical music label. Maybe we can help students learn how to build their own websites, sell their own creations, publish their own video creations on Youtube. Maybe we’ll create more opportunities for adults to experience the magic of God’s transforming love and creative passion. There are so many possibilities for Chrysalis to help people to thrive personally, and to use their God-given gifts and passions to earn a living telling stories, writing stories, making movies, writing music, dancing, singing, painting, drawing, teaching, maybe even something like ice-skating or gymnastics. The possibilities are truly endless. We are so excited, and we look forward to seeing what God does, what He puts on the hearts of artists and churches and communities.

We remain committed to helping people in whatever way God tells us, creating and exploring and discovering, no matter how difficult or crazy His calling is. Because with God, ALL things are possible. Because YOU are worth it. Because nobody deserves to live life in darkness, trapped by depression or addictions or any of the countless personal burdens that people carry around each and every day. We are committed to the love of God, the love that sets you free, the love that can break any chain, the love that can remove any burden.  Every person is born with such incredible inner beauty and light, and it would be a tragedy to allow even a single such masterpiece to be broken, or tarnished, or wasted, or cast away. Please prayerfully consider joining us, as we allow God to work through us to help people blossom and discover just how incredible life can be.
